Professional Experience


A chartered civil engineer with  over 40 years experience of the construction industry. 


Experience of practical civil engineering on road and bridge works, sewers and tunnels - all with Babtie, Shaw & Morton (now Jacobs).


Extensive experience as HM Inspector of Health and Safety (Construction Engineering) specialising in tunnel and ground engineering and Inspector (Civil infrastructure and ventilation) for the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority.


Experience of routine inspection and audit, incident investigation, preparation of reports and statements for enforcement purposes including as expert witness. Has acted for HSE as expert witness at Magistrate’s Court, Crown Court, Sheriff  Court, High Court of Justiciary, Fatal Accident Inquiries, Inquests, Employment Appeal Tribunal.

Has acted as expert witness in Construction & Technology Court


Other experience


Extensive experience of various British (BSI) and European (CEN) standards committees including chairing the committee for BS 6164 "Safety in Tunnelling" and a member of CEN/TC151/WG4 "Tunnelling Machinery - safety" both since 1989. 

Member of the British Tunnelling Society Compressed Air Working Group since 1989.




Extensive experience of construction-related  research including – decompression illness in tunnelling (PhD thesis); fire in normobaric and hyperbaric tunnel environments (technical client whilst in HSE); ground engineering (member of CIRIA Ground Engineering Advisory Panel). Member of Advisory Committee for the EU funded (€10m) NeTTUN project.




Author or joint author of around 80 papers, articles and contributions to books etc.
